Killeen City Council Approves Election Date Change to November

Killeen City Council Approves Election Date Change to November

The Killeen City Council has unanimously approved a resolution to shift the city’s general election date from May to November in odd-numbered years, starting in 2027. This decision aligns with recent amendments to the Texas Election Code, allowing municipalities to make such changes by resolution.

Under the new schedule, all council positions, including the mayor and at-large councilmembers, will be elected simultaneously in November, eliminating staggered terms and elections in even-numbered years. The upcoming May 2026 general election will proceed as planned, electing the mayor and at-large councilmembers.

City Attorney Holli Clements highlighted that this change provides an opportunity to consider charter amendments and potential term adjustments before the new schedule takes effect. The council’s decision aims to streamline the electoral process and potentially increase voter participation by aligning municipal elections with other major elections held in November.
